Frequently Asked Questions

  • 1. What is a Life Coach?
A Life coach is usually someone who is qualified to partner with individuals who are looking to improve their personal and professional lives. Life coaches are trained to be strong active listeners, ask thought-provoking questions, and offer you a psychologically safe space where you can be seen and heard for who you are and who you want to become. Life coaches also support, motivate, challenge, and encourage their clients to set realistic goals and to implement strategies that will keep them moving forward.
  • 2. What is Life Coaching?
Life Coaching is a profession that concentrates on the well-being of the whole person. It looks at all the areas in your life, such as health, relationships, finances, environment, family, etc., and helps you to create and sustain a more balanced, fulfilled, and richer life.
  • 3. What is a Business Coach?
Business Coaches tend to be those who have corporate knowledge and experience, who are entrepreneurs or have grown a successful business themselves and will help navigate you through tactical solutions and strategies, whilst objectively seeing a company’s external and internal issues.
  • 4. Why did you become a Life Coach?
The reason I became a Life Coach, or more to the point a Joy and Purpose Coach, was that no matter how hard things were in the past I always chose to see the opportunities available to me, the valuable lessons I was learning, but above all, I was tired of settling for things and people who limited me and brought me more pain than joy! I love to laugh and when I was going through my divorce (I was living in the Middle East and my 3 children were still quite young), I realized I had lost my bubbly personality, my self-worth, confidence, and my joy for life. I didn't recognize the person I was becoming, and I didn't like it. So, I decided to reclaim my place back in this world and concentrate on anything that would move me forward. I became mentally, physically, and emotionally stronger and I started to get excited about all the opportunities I had yet to experience. One thing has stayed constant and that is, I refused to play the victim. I chose a victor mentality instead and I realized if I could do it then others can too. I have dedicated the last 25 years to teaching, and I now hope to spend the rest of my years serving as a coach. I am a Jay Shetty certified Life and Success coach https://jayshettycoaching.com/coach-platform/#! and I am an ACC accredited with the ICF (International Coaching Federation)
  • 5. How does Life Coaching work?
Life Coaching follows a structured process incorporating key techniques that are used to facilitate personal well-being such as stress relief, self-worth, confidence, strategic planning, time management, and organization. Active listening, reflection questions, brainstorming, and coaching tools help you to stay focused, on track, and take ownership of the direction you want to go and the goals you want to achieve. If you wish to know more then, please check out https://coachingfederation.org/core-competencies for information on the following: Demonstrates Ethical Practice, Embodies a Coaching Mindset, Establishes and Maintains Agreements, Cultivates Trust and Safety, Maintains Presence, Listens Actively, Evokes Awareness and Facilitates Client Growth.
  • 6. Why do people invest in a Life Coach?
There are many reasons why people invest in a life coach. Research shows that some common traits are the desire to change their current situation because they want to have a healthier home-work balance, be more productive, feel more confident going after that dream job, have more joy in their life, to have someone to brainstorm with who is impartial and a trusted third party who will keep them on track. Contrary to belief having a Life Coach isn’t necessarily just for those who aren’t happy with a particular area of their personal or professional life. It could simply be because you are good at what you do, and you now want to get better at it. Partnering with a coach gives you the opportunity to put your wants and needs first, focus on the steps needed to get you to your goal, and allow you the freedom to explore options available to you regardless of how ‘far out there’ your ideas may be! Coaches aren’t just for sportsmen and women, actors or singers. Here are a few people whom you may recognize that have Life Coaches – Oprah Winfrey, Hugh Jackman, Barak Obama, Richard Branson, Bill Gates. Even great coaches have coaches - Tony Robbins, Jay Shetty.
  • 7. What is the difference between Coaching and Therapy?
Counselors and therapists are required to hold a master’s degree or a Doctorate Degree and are trained to diagnose and treat people with mental health issues such as violence, substance abuse, personality disorders, chronic anxiety, and depression. Their focus is to unpeel your past traumas and heal the emotional pain associated with them. Coaching focuses on where you are now and supports you in moving forward and towards a more fulfilled and balanced future. If you have or are currently suffering from any mental health issues, then please reach out to a mental health professional before approaching a Life Coach. If your therapist thinks that having a coach would complement your progress, then both parties can collaborate and build a support system around your needs.
  • 8. How do I choose a Life Coach?
A coaching relationship must be based on trust and rapport. It is imperative that you feel safe, respected, and permitted to be vulnerable. It is crucial that you feel you can express yourself openly, fully, and safely with your coach. There are many ways to find out if your Life Coach is certified and accredited. If a Life Coach says they are accredited then they will be on the accreditation website (ICF, AC, EMCC, etc). You can also look for Coach Training Schools for information and profiles. If the coach doesn’t have a recognized certification or accreditation this doesn’t mean they aren’t experienced or good at their job, it just means that they are not bound by the global code of ethics. Regulating credentials, professional development, and professional conduct are becoming increasingly popular and essential. This ultimately protects you and the information you share.
  • 9. What happens during a coaching session?
I use Solution Focused coaching which applies a positive approach towards change that laser focuses on what can be done. It promotes creativity, critical thinking, innovation, resourcefulness, and finding hidden strengths. Snapshot of what a coaching session looks like: Check-in on how you have been since our last session Celebrate your wins and acknowledge the challenges Establish what you would like to focus on for that session Set a goal that will move you forward/clarify or empower Predict any obstacles that may come in the way of you accomplishing your goal Explore the opportunities and resources that are available to you Review your action plan Discuss how you will hold yourself accountable Agree to close the coaching conversation when you feel you have actionable steps and deeper awareness of the topic/issue you brought to the session
  • 10. Are our conversations and my information confidential?
All information about the coach/client relationship will remain strictly confidential except in very rare circumstances whereby decreed by law, i.e., where the court might issue a subpoena for the file or information. Exceptions to confidentiality relate to circumstances such as intent to seriously harm someone, child abuse, thoughts of suicide, etc. Otherwise, all remaining information is kept confidential. If you have been diagnosed with a learning difficulty or may suspect that this could be the case, then I encourage you to be open about it during our Clarity Call or Onboarding Call. This will enable me to really understand how I can support you better and for us to have a deeper discussion as to how you would like to be coached, your preference for structure and communication, and so forth. This is a safe space, and it is important for you to see that how you are is a gift and together we can cater to your strengths and scaffold the challenges. • 11. How long are the coaching sessions?
1:1 Coaching sessions are typically 60 minutes long and my Group Mentoring Programs are 90-minutes.
  • 12. How many sessions will I need?
Everyone's needs and goals are different as well as their commitment to change their current situation. For their to be a noticeable shift it is recommended for clients to have a minimum of 8-12 sessions. This allows us to build a strong relationship and to implement measurable goals.
  • 13. Where will our coaching sessions take place?
I conduct my 1:1 Coaching sessions via Zoom or in-person and my Mentoring Programs via Zoom. I have found that my clients tend to prefer this form of coaching as it gives them the flexibility to take the calls at home, work, coffee shop, or any other desired location. The other benefits to this are that you can have the camera on or off (handy if you want early morning calls, having a lazy day, and don’t want to dress up for your session), you don’t have to commute and deal with the traffic or fight for parking. Another perk or bonus to this is that you are not restricted to finding a coach in your hometown. I have clients from around the world who achieve fantastic results because it is less stressful, and they come to their sessions focused and prepared. If you live in Dubai and want to meet face-to-face then I am happy to accommodate this at a premium rate.
