Our Emotions Are Healthy Reminders

Updated: Nov 23, 2022

One thing I've learned about myself is that I am an emotional person. I wear my heart on my sleeve, I'm easily excited, have a fiery temper when threatened and I am extremely focused when I feel passionate about something.

Over the years I have done a lot of work on myself and have come to learn that emotions are valuable information and there is a beautiful spectrum and intensity to them. They warn us, empower us, motivate us, stimulate us and encourage us to grow, learn and appreciate.

Here are some 'life lessons,' and tips I have learned about emotions:

Why don't we start looking at negative emotions as a gift, as life’s way of giving you that sign, prompt, and nudge for you to reevaluate the situation you find yourself in.

Instead of turning in on yourself and putting yourself down pause and ask yourself:

  • What is really going on right now?

  • Where am I mentally, emotionally, and physically?

  • What is it about this situation that is making me feel less than, out of control, uneasy, and angry?

  • Are there any triggers or patterns?

  • What is the learning/lesson here?

  • What do I need to do to change my current predicament?

  • What will be the outcome if I do nothing?

  • What will be the outcome if I do something?

  • How many ‘signs’ will it take for me to listen and implement a plan of action?

Positive emotions can be little (or big, depending on the situation), explosions of joy, and empowerment. They tend to remind us that what we are doing, what we have planned, and what we have done has a greater sense of purpose, feeling alive, and fulfillment. When we are in a positive state our perspective changes and we tend to be more resourceful, solution-focused, empathetic, and giving.

When you are in this emotional headspace ask yourself these questions:

  • What is really going on right now?

  • Where am I mentally, emotionally, and physically?

  • Who am I with?

  • What is it about this situation that is making me feel confident, in control, open, and excited?

  • What do I like most about myself when I am in this mindset?

  • Are there any triggers or patterns?

  • What is the learning/lesson here?

  • Which reminders/strategies can I put in my ‘emotional toolkit’ for those days when I am not thinking clearly?

What human beings can do is amazing, what they will do is usually disappointing…to change your results you have to change your behavior, to change your behavior you have to change the emotional state you are in – Tony Robbins
