Pivotal Moment - Breaking Wood and Unleashing the Power Within

Updated: May 1, 2023

I was clearing out boxes underneath the stairs in preparation for my impending move in June and came across a 2 cm thick plank of wood that I broke using the heel of my hand.

In 2009 I did a 10-week self-defense course and it was one of the most pivotal moments of my life. I felt so alive and empowered. Every week I went home with the biggest smile on my face, bruises, scratches, and muscle fatigue!

Even though I am only 5'3 inches, I have never felt small. However, as a woman, I have felt intimidated and fearful.

What these 10-weeks gave me was more than just strategies in how to protect myself, it gave back my self-worth and belief.

On the last day of the course, everyone took turns in breaking the plank of wood and signing each other's boards. Reading these comments brought back so many wonderful emotions and reminded me of how feisty I really am.

One exercise stands out above all. We were asked to turn up wearing white t-shirts as we were going to simulate a knife fight using big colored marker pens. Standing in front of my opponent I was feeling quite self-conscious as everyone was watching. We met each other's gaze. Smiling, I let out a nervous giggle. The instructor blew the whistle.

My 'attacker's' next words changed my state from self-conscious and weak to seeing red. The words she uttered with a smile were 'Your kids are mine'.

Well, there was carnage!!! Before she knew it she was on the floor in a headlock. When the 2-minutes were up we laid there exhausted. We looked at each other and burst out laughing. The instructor asked her what she had learned and she said 'Never mention someone's children!'

The lessons I learned about myself that day were so profound and powerful. They have helped me face so many challenges, confirm that I am stronger than I think and if I can look up then I can get up.
