Respect. Words such as empathetic, kind, compassionate, and attentive are used when you think about being respectful toward others or to have respect for yourself.
If you feel people do not show you respect ask yourself this question, ‘Are my actions and behaviour inviting respect from those I am engaging with or are they triggering defensive responses and reactions?’
Here are 8 ways you can enhance respect for yourself and others:
Practice active listening and seek to understand – Pause and listen to what is being said
Compromise - look for common ground
Compassion - show empathy for the differences – we all have different life experiences
Sorry doesn’t have to be the hardest word! - Apologize when you are wrong and learn from it
Be Polite – saying please and thank you costs you nothing but makes people feel seen, heard and appreciated
Show Gratitude – there is always something to be grateful for
Catching random acts of kindness – acknowledge those who are doing something well, supporting others or are just being nice
Time is a precious commodity - be mindful of other people’s time
